Use of the correct denomination of the
former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
Honourable High Representative - Vice
President of European Commission,
By this letter, we would like to express
both our surprise and concern, regarding a response you gave during today's
Press Conference on the European Neighbourhood Policy Review, where you
referred to your recent visit at former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM),
mentioning the country by the denomination "Macedonia".
According to the conclusions of the
December 2005 GAERC, "until a mutually acceptable solution to name issue
has been reached with Greece, the EU will continue to use the temporary
designation the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to all EU documents
and fora" (Council of the European Union document 15638/1/05/REV1).
Moreover, in the "Note to Directors
General and Heads of Service", issued by the Secretary General, Catherine
Day, on August 27th 2014, is noted the "need to respect official practice
when referring to the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in all documents
and correspondence prepared by the Commission", adding that "The name
"Republic of Macedonia" or "Macedonia" is not to be used by
the Commission".
Therefore, we would kindly ask you to
proceed to all necessary steps in order to remedy and avoid in the future the
above mentioned contradiction.
Sincerely,
Eva KAILI Nikos
