Announcement
August 1, 2009, Skopje
Dear compatriots, Macedonians
It gives me great pleasure to be able, at my first Ilinden as President of the Republic of Macedonia, to address you. Esteemed, the connection which Macedonia supports with its sons and daughters abroad is (kali) once a year, and that is this day. Ilinden is our day when... we celebrate the enlightenment of the Macedonians, our declaration that Macedonia will endure, prevail and will remain sovereign and independent. This is the “thundering” message Macedonians sent to the entire world, and from whose echo today beats every Macedonian heart. That heartbeat lives strong in every continent of the world, near and far from our mother country. You, the Macedonians in Australia, the Macedonians in the United States of America, Canada, Germany, France and every free country in the world, have been those who took with you and safeguarded the embers of Ilinden. That is your pride, and your cross which you wear with dignity and courage. Dear friends. From all my contacts with the Macedonians who live far away from their fatherland, I know that this is and always will be in their hearts, especially on a day like this. I know that we are not doing enough to strengthen our connection and I know that I am the latest President of the independent Macedonia chosen without giving the Diaspora a chance to come out and vote. That is something that must be corrected before the next elections. I know that attempts of the Macedonians from the Diaspora to offer help, to offer cooperation, are often welcomed with insufficient understanding. That is why we must learn to help ourselves. We must stop the divisions and arguing wherever they happen. The challenges with which we are confronted in our struggle and still manage to stand dignified under the sun as equals with other people, are what unites us and brings us together. But we need to work together at all times, good and bad and not just when we face hardships. My Macedonians, one more time greetings and Happy Ilinden.
