Greek-Israeli firm to build Montengro highway

Podgorica. Montenegro on Tuesday said it would sign a contract with a Greek-Israeli company to build part of a highway linking Montenegro's coast to its northern border with Serbia, a minister said, AFP reported.

Greek-Israeli consortium Aktor Concessions S.A. and Israeli Shikun & Binui Ltd will build 63.5 kilometers of the 170-kilometer (100-mile) highway for EUR 1.57 billion (USD 1.99 billion), Transport Minister Andrija Lompar told reporters in Podgorica.

Aktor-HCH, which secured a 30-year concession agreement as part of the deal, is expected to begin roadwork in next four months and to complete the project by 2014, Lompar said.

Aktor-HCH has initially offered to do the entire job for EUR 3.9 billion, but the deal was made so far only for the smaller part from the Adriatic port of Bar towards the north.


The existing road linking Serbia with Montenegro's Adriatic coast is notorious for its poor condition, which has been blamed for a high number of serious traffic accidents.
