About

Death to All Juice is an exploitable catchphrase stemming from a picture of a protester holding an anti-Israel picket sign that read “Death To All (zionist) Juice.” Similar to Get a Brain, Morans, the sign became an exploitable due to its misspelling.

Origin

On December 28th, 2008, New Jersey high school student Carlos Almonte attended a protest held outside of the Israeli embassy in New York against the bombing of the Gaza region. While protesting, he held up a picket sign that read “Death To All (Zionist) Juice.” An image of Almonte holding the sign was first uploaded to the Webshots[1]members gallery on the day of the protest by the photographer, Pamela Hall. Little Green Footballs[2] blogged about the image the next day.

“Eliminate All The Juice”

Previous to the appearance of the protest sign, an image macro of a child dressed up as Hitler appeared online as early as March 2008[13] using “juice” in replacement of “Jews.” Stating “I have eliminated all the juice,” the macro spread via various social media outlets, including Digg, Reddit[14] and other sites.

Spread

The image was posted to Buzzfeed[3] and Reddit[4] on December 30th, 2008. It was also shared on Digg[5] beginning December 31st. On February 9th, 2009, the image was uploaded to FAILblog[6] where it received almost 8000 votes and over 380 comments. Taking pride in the viral success of his own picture, Almonte even uploaded the image as his own Facebook profile picture.[7]

Arrest

On June 6th, 2010, Almonte (on the right) and his friend Mohamed Alessa were arrested by the federal authorities at the JFK International Airport, accused of attempting to fly to Somalia to join an Islamist insurgent group. The pair had been under photo surveillance by the FBI since 2006.[8]

Both naturalized Americans, they were charged with conspiracy to kidnap, maim, and murder civilians overseas as part of the group al-Shabaab.[9][10] After the arrests, Gawker[11] confirmed that Almonte was in fact the owner of the Death to all Juice sign. In March 2011, the men plead guilty to the charges and are facing possible life sentences.[12]

Search Interest

Search for “Death to All Juice” peaked in January 2009, immediately after the photo was taken. The second peak in the June 2010 aligns with the time of Almonte’s arrest.
