Bulgarian Blagorodna Filevska, MEP candidate in PASOK ticket in Greece, in an interview with Focus News Agency.
FOCUS: Ms. Filevska, you are a candidate for a Member of the European Parliament. Which party has put you up and which place do you... occupy in the ticket?
Blagorodna Filevska: At the proposal, at the invitation of PASOK party. This is the biggest opposition party in Greece – socialist movement PASOK – and at the proposal of Georgios Papandreou. I occupy the 20th out of 22 places in the ticket.
FOCUS: Why do you run for an MEP seat in Greece?
Blagorodna Filevska: The nomination is not mine; it is an invitation, which is an honor for me. I accepted the invitation. This is great honor and gesture for the thousands of Bulgarians living and working in Greece, as well as for the dozens of thousands of other emigrants in the country.
FOCUS: Has the European election campaign started in Greece and when will the elections be held?
Blagorodna Filevska: Yes, it has. Greece holds the elections on June 7th too. The election campaign has kicked off and I hope it will end successfully.
FOCUS: What is the interest in the elections in Greece? It seems in Bulgaria they do not enjoy great interest.
Blagorodna Filevska: Some public circles are afraid here as well because the interest for now is not big, but with certainty, because I am following the situation in Bulgaria too, the interest is bigger than in Bulgaria. The voter turnout in the European elections will be less than the one in the parliamentary elections, but after all the elections are in two weeks’ time. It is the final result that is important.
FOCUS: What would be your priorities as an MEP?
Blagorodna Filevska: The proposal I received is connected with the fact that I am an emigrant in Greece. Emigrants are all people who have accepted to live and work in a given country. Representing the dozens of thousands of Bulgarians and other emigrants in Greece, I would like to represent their interests for equal participation in the political and public life both in Greece and the EU as a unification of citizens. In this sense I will stand up for all problems that affect the life of emigrants and foreigners in Greece in cooperation with the entire group of MEPs of PASOK and Greece.
I would like to add something. I do not intend to speak in singular, i.e. about me personally. Elections are a personal choice for each of the potential voters. However, I believe that the commitments and work of an MEP have a meaning within one working group. The elections themselves and my possible presence in the parliament is another question. Whatever the result, it does not matter whether I and other PASOK MEPs will be there. The decision of PASOK to include me in the ticket of these skilled people is a guarantee that the elected MEPs will work in the favor of both Bulgarians, who are living and working in Greece, and all other emigrants and European citizens in Greece.
FOCUS: What messages does the party send to the voters?
Blagorodna Filevska: I would like to note that I am not a member of the party. But I believe in European ideals and values and in socialist idea as a public and political alternative in general. I support the vision of the Greek socialist party for a united Europe in which its citizen has a priority. This is one of the main messages of the election campaign. PASOK suggests a vision for Europe, with its center being citizens and their social and civil rights.
FOCUS: What do opinion polls show for PASOK’s performance in the elections?
Blagorodna Filevska: The opinion polls show that the difference between the first and second party will be 5%. According to the polls PASOK will come in first in the European elections.
FOCUS: How many members does Greece have in the EP?
Blagorodna Filevska: Greece has 24 MEPs. For now the opinion polls show that PASOK will win some 30% support. The difference between it and the next party is 5%. The results have been estimated if the voter turnout is 70-80%. The choice of PASOK to select me as an MEP candidate is great honor for me, for all Bulgarians in Greece and for Bulgaria as an EU full-fledged member state. Greece is one of the countries that gave precious help and support for Bulgaria’s accession to the Union.
