The United States hopes that there will be swift progress in the talks between Skopje and Athens on the disputed name issue between the two countries, after snap elections in Greece slated for 4 October are over.

The US Deputy Secretary of State, James Steinberg told this to "Macedonian" President Georgi Ivanov at a meeting on Wednesday in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Voice of America's "Macedonian" news reported.

US Ambassador to Skopje Philip Reeker, who attended the meeting, told media that Steinberg voiced hope that the two neighboring countries will use the post-elections period in Greece to move forward in the UN sponsored talks.

"We hope that the process will continue once a new Greek government will be formed and that the two countries will use the assistance of UN mediator Nimetz to achieve progress and find a solution as soon as possible," said Reeker. The US remains prepared to help and to support the process.

On Thursday, Ivanov will meet UN mediator Matthew Nimetz. The presidential cabinet describes the meeting as a “regular exchange of views”.

Last year Athens blocked Skopje’s accession to NATO over the unresolved row. Athens argues that Skopje’s constitutional name Republic of "Macedonia" implies its territorial claims towards Greece’s own northern province that is also called "Macedonia".

Last month Nimetz visited both countries in an attempt to bring them closer to a deal. Local media speculate that his latest set of ideas for a solution, containing variations of the name Northern Macedonia are still on the table.

But local media also comment that Ivanov’s last statements regarding the dispute do not give much hope for a swift solution. Ivanov has insisted that the country will stick to a so-called double name formula, where Skopje will use its constitutional name Republic of "Macedonia", exept in its dealings with Greece, where it will use a formula that is acceptable to both countries. Greece has on numerous occasions rejected this proposal.
