The state prosecution for fight against corruption in Vienna has launched investigation against the Siemens over suspicion that the company has given 50 million Euros in bribe in order to get deals in countries of the Southeast Europe. The Siemens in Serbia is also under investigation over bribing in public purchases, the prosecution spokesman Eric Meyer confirmed to Blic.
Apart from Serbia, tenders in Croatia, Bosnia/Herzegovina and Bulgaria have been also included in the investigation. The bribe was usually paid via agreements for consulting services.
Mayer could not reveal any further information because that might affect the investigation which is expected to be finished until this autumn.
The actual affair in Serbia in recent two weeks is that of the ‘scanners’ referring to faked tenders for purchase of equipment for radiology that Blic reported about.
The Siemens participated in the tenders in 2011 and 2012. They are suspicious because the purchase of equipment was carried out as per identical schemes when prices were inflated.
Threat to Blic sources
The Blic sources that were helping in revealing the story on faked tenders in the healthcare are exposed in recent days to serious threats and pressures. Until so far, Blic has published a series of nine articles on abuses in purchase of the equipment for radiology’.
The Ministry of Health purchased from the Siemens a CT scanner for 44.4 million Dinars as well as an op. theatre for 66.9 million Dinars in 2011. A year later, the Ministry of Health purchased from the Siemens a device for magnet resonance for 218.3 millions. It is indicative that the Siemens equipment was more expensive than that of other bidders.
Ratko Krakovic of the Siemens representative office in Serbia says that the investigation in Austria regarding the deals in the Southeast Europe has nothing to do with the radiology equipment but with the deals concerning telecommunications.
